The Intellectual Relationship between Nietzsche and Freud

This article begins with a brief review of the evidence that Freud was familiar with and influenced by the writings of Nietzsche. Secondly, there is a comparison of Nietzsche’s and Freud’s respective outlooks on human motivation, based on Nietzsche’s theory of the will to power and Freud’s theory of drives.

It should be noted that Ellenberger, in his monumental history of dynamic psychiatry, places Nietzsche in the context of a great number of nineteenth century thinkers who anticipated Freud in various ways.
